Historical Background

With a legacy of excellence spanning over six decades, established on June 29, 1956, Railway Training Institute (RTI) originally served as a dedicated skill development center for the staff of the East African Railways and Harbours (EAR&H). Following the dissolution of the East African Community in 1976, the Institute was integrated into the Kenya Railways Corporation, where it continued to provide specialized railway training.

A pivotal transformation occurred in 1990 when RTI opened its doors to the general public, expanding its curriculum to include Engineering and Business courses from Certificate, Diploma, and Higher Diploma levels. Registered under the TVET Act, 2013, Section 20(1) as a Technical and Vocational College, RTI has since experienced phenomenal growth in student enrollment. This sustained growth is driven by our commitment to delivering high-quality courses, supported by excellent training facilities and infrastructure.

To maintain our competitive edge and fulfill our mandate, we have embarked on a strategic expansion program aimed at transforming the Institute into a premier regional center for Rail, Marine, Transport, and Logistics training. Through the continuous upgrading of our Campus infrastructure, the operationalization of marine training at RTI Kisumu Campus, and the integration of modern technology, RTI continues to set the standard for training, research, and innovation.
